The New EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the most important change in data privacy regulation in 20 years.
It is a complex topic and many have heard about it, popularized by the massive e-mail communication on the topic recently sent by several companies around the world to their clients and users. However, with the right guidance, it will be easy to understand and quickly learn the right steps for your company to become compliant.
After four years of preparation and debate the GDPR was finally approved by the EU Parliament in 2016 and entered into force on 25 May 2018. From now on, companies in the EU and companies in third countries storing data of EU citizens or companies may face heavy fines if non-compliant.
The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations approach data privacy. The GDPR also applies to organizations located outside of the EU if they offer goods or services to, or monitor the behavior of, EU data subjects. In fact, it applies to all companies processing and holding personal data of data subjects residing in the European Union, regardless of the company’s location.
If you are based in Vietnam but fall within that category, you are obliged to comply with GPDR, but doing so is definitely within your reach.
