Why a free workshop on Disability Mainstreaming?
Over 1 billion people globally experience disability: that is 1 out of 7 worldwide (WHO, 2014). Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments. In interaction with various barriers they may face, persons with disabilities may lack full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. Thus, 1 out of 7 worldwide is hampered in their full and effective participation and contribution to society.
This makes disability mainstreaming an important process and human rights issue, which is stressed in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The convention promotes changing attitudes and approaches to persons with disabilities; and at the same time, the convention provides us a human rights instrument to challenge governments to apply those rights. The Vietnamese government ratified the UNCRPD in December 2014, meaning that laws are going to be changed in favor of inclusive policies (Good news!), which opens more doors and asks for more hard inclusive work.
At the same time, the motto of the new post MDG agenda is ‘leave no one behind’, meaning that the realization of including everyone is a worldwide trending topic.
