DBAV Fundraising Initiative – Acting Against Climate Change, Together

DBAV is proud to share that since 2025, in collaboration with MSD United Way Vietnam, we have been implementing the “Environmental Ambassador – Planting 1 Hectare of Mangrove Forest on Hung Long Islet” project in Tra Vinh province.

This long-term initiative aims to contribute to climate resilience in the Mekong Delta by restoring mangrove ecosystems while supporting local communities and biodiversity. Through the support of our members, partners, and the wider community, DBAV has been raising funds to plant and maintain mangrove trees that will protect vulnerable coastal areas for years to come.

Project Background

The Mekong Delta is one of the regions in Vietnam most vulnerable to climate change. Located at the lower reaches of the Mekong River, the region frequently experiences rising tides, flooding, riverbank erosion, and salinity intrusion. These environmental changes threaten agricultural production, infrastructure, livelihoods, and the overall ecological balance.

According to climate change projections, if sea levels rise by just one meter, approximately 70% of the Mekong Delta’s land area could be affected by salinity intrusion. In Tra Vinh province, nearly 46% of the total land area (about 1,021 km²) could be inundated, significantly impacting coastal agriculture and aquaculture.

Mangrove forests play a critical role in mitigating these impacts by stabilizing sediments, preventing erosion, protecting coastlines from storms, and supporting biodiversity.

Hung Long Islet – A New Opportunity for Mangrove Restoration

Hung Long Islet, located in Tra Vinh province, is a newly formed alluvial island within the Mekong Delta. The island began emerging in 2011, became more clearly defined in 2022, and was identified as suitable for mangrove afforestation in 2024.

The island covers approximately 70 hectares, of which 20 hectares are suitable for mangrove planting. As a newly formed alluvial area with high porosity and deep sediment layers, Lumnitzera trees have been identified as the ideal pioneering species for this environment.

These trees are particularly effective in:

  • Stabilizing soil in brackish water environments

  • Preventing coastal erosion

  • Protecting agricultural land and irrigation infrastructure

  • Supporting biodiversity and ecological restoration

Tree Planting and Long-Term Maintenance

According to government regulations, establishing and maintaining 1 hectare of mangrove forest requires:

  • Planting 2,500 Lumnitzera trees, and

  • Replanting approximately 875 supplementary trees during the following years.

Over time, this initial planting will help form a stable mangrove ecosystem. Once the forest matures after approximately five years, additional mangrove species may be introduced to enhance biodiversity.

Project Activities

Following research and assessment of afforestation opportunities in Tra Vinh province, MSD United Way Vietnam selected Hung Long Islet for this initiative. Key activities include:

  • Planting 2,500 Lumnitzera trees in erosion-prone areas

  • Maintaining and supplementing 875 additional trees over a 10-year period

  • Raising community awareness about mangrove ecosystems and the impacts of waste pollution on coastal forests

Expected Impact

This project will contribute to the development of a natural protective barrier against storms, strong winds, and soil erosion. The anticipated benefits include:

  • Increased carbon absorption through expanded mangrove coverage

  • Enhanced biodiversity and coastal ecosystem restoration

  • Additional income opportunities for local communities through aquaculture habitats for fish, crabs, clams, and other species

  • Employment opportunities for approximately 100 local workers over the 10-year implementation period

Beneficiaries

Direct beneficiaries:
1,175 residents of Nhi Hamlet, My Long Nam Commune

Indirect beneficiaries:
Communities across My Long Nam, My Long Bac, and My Long Town in Cau Ngang District, as well as the wider population of Tra Vinh province (over 135,000 residents).

How You Can Contribute

The cost to plant and maintain one mangrove tree is 153,000 VND (approximately USD 6).
This includes seedlings, labor, planting services, project monitoring, annual reporting, communication, and project management over a 10-year period.

You can contribute by sponsoring as many trees as you wish and become part of a collective effort to restore Vietnam’s coastal ecosystems.
